Your PDA makes a point at the beginning of the game that it's singular purpose is keeping you alive on an alien world. All that stuff is hidden in the F1 screen - which is a cheat, not a feature.Īn exploration game should give you the tools you need to be an effective explorer - including creating a map as you go. Keep in mind that not only does subnautica not have a map feature, it doesn't even have coordinates. A new player has no idea what points he's going to need to return to, so he would need hundreds of beacons to mark -everything- he encounters. This way you would need to explore the map and build multiple bases to create a map.īeacons are nice and all, but the most they can do is give you directions to a single point. I think you should be able to upload maps to your PDA from scanner stations.

I'm nearing the end of the game and I still cannot find my way around. Originally posted by Name Lips:I know I, for one, have a terrible memory. Most of what you’ve proposed would only add to their cannon fodder. I made a general statement that a map shouldn’t just be shoved into the game.Īll these other ideas may be fine but I’ll tell you there’s a large crown of people (that I disagree with) that state that they think the game is already “tedious”. I haven't ignore any of these propositions as they are not what OP proposed. If the goal is to make the game harder, then why include beacons at all? Why include a compass? Those aren't too hand-holdy for you? Are you saying that the precise combination of navigational tools currently in the game just happens to have hit the exact level of difficulty required, and that any more tools would make the game too easy, and any fewer would make it too hard? There are LOTS of options for cartography, some of which are very time consuming and difficult, and I feel like you're dismissing them all out of hand. Heck it would be nice to have even a blank map that just shows the location of your beacons from an overhead perspective so you can get some sense of where things are relative to each other. You could make a Miasmata style map where you triangulate all landmarks based on getting a clear view of them relative to existing landmarks.

I feel like you're trivializing the issue by pretending people just want to hit "M" and see a clear, complete map with their location marked.Īs people have said, you could be required to set up powered scanner rooms across the world, and your PDA map only includes the terrain in the range of the scanner rooms. There are lots of ways to make cartography and interesting and difficult challange in video games. People keep asking for it because they forget to put down beacons and they have no sense of general direction. The game doesn’t handhold with the exploration aspect. Try to not pinpoint one sentence out of my three paragraph post to prove a point. Originally posted by Name Lips:That's weird, if it's unnecessary, why do so many people want to be able to create one as they explore?
